Round Penning: What Do I Do First?
Are you starting a young horse or re-training an older one? I strongly recommend making an investment of just $5.99 for my round-penning course.

- 5 days, 5 chapters
- Learn at your own pace

An excerpt from Round Pen: First Steps

Today (Day One) we'll naturally begin with the initial steps of round penning. We'll begin putting you in charge by getting the horse to move consistently, then build on that by gradually asking for changes of direction in certain ways or places. This work will naturally lead us to teaching our horse to come to us, which we'll cover in Day Two. Day Three we'll use the round pen to teach our horse what to do when something scares him with an exercise called "Spook in Place." On our fourth day we'll run through the sacking out process, desensitizing the horse to our touch. We'll wrap up on Day Five by teaching our horse to pick up his feet when we simply point. Remember, that while I call them "Days" each of the five segments can be (and should be) taken at a pace that works for you and your horse. If you get frustrated or tired and quit, your horse won't spend the evening telling his barn buddies "I won." He won't take it personally and neither should you. If you concentrate each time you work with your horse and work until you make one change, however, small, you will succeed.
