An excerpt from Trailer Training: An Easy guide to the Proven Methods of John Lyons:

To combat this, institute a zero tolerance policy regarding his stiff neck and bulging shoulder. As you walk toward the trailer use the exercises covered during Days One and Two to make sure that his neck remains soft and bent away from you, his chin brought a few inches toward the point of the nearest shoulder. Stay proactive by continuously asking for softness and a pretty arc in the neck. Should the horse momentarily gain the upper hand by beginning to look away, react swiftly by demanding that he soften his neck, bow it away and bring his head down. Ask his hips to disengage if you really need to make a quick point. (Pull his head toward you, his hips away.) The key is to be ready before he tries it the second time.

The Horse Pushes You Around with His Shoulder

The horse that bullies you with his shoulder is closely related to the horse just described, the one that looks away then drags you off. When he looks off and tenses his neck, he'll place his body in a very similar shape, with his shoulder angled toward you. Deal with this as you would the other – but also go back to Day Two and refresh your memory on how to get that shoulder to move away. Practice that, asking the horse to bring his head slightly down and toward you, perhaps disengaging the hips, then driving his shoulder away from you. Once again, you'll need to be proactive, asking that shoulder to stay light, never giving it a chance to "bulge at you."
