An excerpt from Trailer Training: An Easy guide to the Proven Methods of John Lyons:
When roundpenning you will want to carry either a lunge whip or a lasso that you can use to flick at your horse to force movement should he ignore your kisses or more subtle requests. Be aware that your horse might start ignoring motivators (throwing the rope at him, for instance) if you don't back them up with greater action on your part, should he fail to move off after one tick of the clock. When you flick the lunge whip or rope lightly, back it up by making the sucker really move if he dawdles. You'll want to use the least amount of motivation possible at all times – then back it up with a good flick of the whip or some such that'll say "Do it now" when necessary. Don't teach him that "you got no teeth in your bite."
By the time you can turn your horse at a specific point, the horse will have started to decide that this isn't much fun. It should be said that, while we're not trying to "tire the horse out" we are trying to use all the exercise to motivate him to find an answer to this question: "What, exactly, will it take for you to just let me stand here?" We'll use the lungs and heart to tell the brain – "Hey, figure something out already!" You'll take this in increments, applying pressure to get the horse closer and closer to the manger in your trailer.
