An excerpt from Trailer Training: An Easy guide to the Proven Methods of John Lyons:
It's a judgment call on your part when working in the round pen: We love this animal, we're not trying to run it to pieces, but we need to keep him motivated. Granted, you can do this work in installments. You can quit at anytime and pick up where you left off tomorrow. (After all, only you and your vet know the health of your horse's legs.) However, if you don't keep the pressure on your horse, it'll take a very long time to get the horse in the trailer using this system – and his prowess as an athlete will grow daily. To that end, when you allow the horse to stop, you should let it air up, make your point that "you did something right," pet the horse – a lot, and get back to work. Keep the pressure on, but use common sense.
