An excerpt from Trailer Training: An Easy guide to the Proven Methods of John Lyons:
Continue to gradually drive the horse deeper into the trailer. If you keep the pressure up, progressively (and logically) asking for more and more, you'll eventually find the horse will load himself completely. As stated previously, you'll need to go back and teach the horse to load and unload in more of a controlled fashion. To do that, simply employ the methods described during Day/Segment Three. The bottom line there is that you want to teach the horse that he can never take more than one or two steps in either direction without being under your control. That means plenty of go forward a step, back a step. Go forward two steps, go back a step – and so on.
