Round Pen First Steps

- Learn at your own pace
An excerpt from "Round Pen First Steps":
Ask the horse to pick up a trot to the left and then ask for a turn to the outside. The exact moment that you believe the horse is committed to the turn, jump (with sort of a sideways and slightly forward movement) to your right, cutting off his movement, driving his head back in to the fence. If he tries to turn inside (and he'll try everything), simply turn him back out, saying "I asked for an outside turn." Do what it takes to get him stopped with his head pointed to the fence, his rear toward you. (Be careful to stay a full horse-length away from those back feet.) More likely than not he'll try several different dodges, either trying to complete his turn or even going the opposite direction. To speed up the process, be very quick to back away (I'm talking in a quarter of a second) the moment he's committed to the turn and then be ready to jump back forwards to "shut him down" should he try to complete the turn and run off. I literally mean for you to "back away," not turn and move away. Turning your body will drive the horse in directions you don't want. Backing away very quickly releases the pressure he feels from you. Start paying particular attention to how the positioning of your hips effects your horse's movements. (rpt)
