An excerpt from "Round Pen First Steps":

One of the most important concepts you need to carry with you is this: When you ask for movement from the horse, it means he moves exactly one beat later. You must follow an absolute zero tolerance policy. Throughout your time spent in the round pen, you will give your horse exactly one request to move (something, anything) before backing up your request with motivation (throw your lasso, snap your whip, sing something from "The Magic Flute," etc.). It should work like this: You kiss (or do what you do to suggest movement) and the horse moves. If, however, you kiss and the horse stares at you, you need to explode like a freight train. It is critical that you NEVER allow the horse to ignore a request to move. Moving the wrong way is always, always, always better than not moving. If you want him to move to the inside and he turns out, at least he's moved and hasn't learned to ignore you. He can only move six directions and will eventually get it right if you follow this simple process: In all training situations, get the feet to move, get them to move consistently, get them to move where you want them to go. Freezing up or ignoring our cue to move is never tolerated. The flipside of this is that you need to remember to back off when possible, relax your stance and pet the horse often. You must be continually looking for chances to relieve the pressure from the horse when he does right. Keeping him rocketing around the round pen without an "atta boy" will make him afraid of you. Smile a lot, have fun, look for opportunities to walk to the opposite side of the pen and hang out. (rpt)
